Nichelle Nichols, the remembered Star Trek Lieutenant Uhura, has died

“Friends, Fans, Colleagues, World – I am sorry to inform you that a great light in the sky no longer shines for us as it has for so many years,” Johnson’s message on Facebook begins.

Next, he says: “Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. However, her light, like ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from and inspire.”

In the text, the artist highlights that Nichols’ life was “well lived and as such a model for all of us, I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and tolerance as we grieve his loss until we can recover sufficiently to to keep talking”.

Then he clarifies that the tribute services will be “for family members and closest friends.” Likewise, he requests “that his privacy and ours be respected.”

“Long life and prosperity”, concludes Johnson’s message on the networks, in reference to the Vulcan salute, one of the most famous races of Star Trek.

In the series, Nichols played Nyota Uhura, a woman born in the United States of Africa in the year 2239, who served as a communications officer for the USS Enterprise.

Nichols was born on December 28, 1932 in the city of Robbins, Illinois, near Chicago. His first steps in art were taken as a singer, along with artists like Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton, among others.
