The prototype of a flying car passed a 35 minute flight between two international airports. After landing, its developer drove happily down the runway.
The Aircar is a hybrid between an airplane and a car. It is equipped with an ordinary BMW engine that runs on petrol. Within two minutes and 15 seconds, the car can be transformed into an airplane at the push of a button thanks to the extendable wings and a propeller at the rear.
The inventor of the Aircar, Stefan Klein, plans to fly up to 1,000 kilometers at an altitude of 2,500 meters with his flying car. With a top speed of 170 kilometers per hour, the car should be able to stay in the air for 40 hours. Two people with a maximum weight of 200kg could already fly with the aircar.
Test flight from Nitra to Bratislava
On Monday, Klein made the first test flight between the international airports of Nitra and Bratislava in Slovakia. After touching down on the runway, he transformed his aircar into a car and drove onto the airport grounds, past the waiting reporters. Klein himself later described the trip with the Aircar as a “normal flight” and emphasized how happy he was that the test flight was a success.
The aircar: the future of hybrid travel?
The successful test flight is the first milestone for Klein and his company Klein Vision after two years of development work. The project, which so far cost almost two million euros, opened the door to a market, according to the consulting firm Morgan Stanley. According to her, the market for hybrid aircraft could be worth 1.5 trillion euros in 2040. Michael Cole, head of Hyundai Motors, also called the aircar “part of our future”.
