How did Jamal Edwards’ fatal heart attack come about? A coroner has now revealed new details about the circumstances of death.
In February 2022, the music world mourned the loss of rapper and entrepreneur Jamal Edwards (1990-2022). The founder of the influential music channel SBTV on YouTube died at the age of just 31 from complications of a heart attack, as his mother, singer Brenda Edwards (53), confirmed to broadcaster ITV. Now new details about the circumstances of the musician’s death are known.
The responsible London coroner has now announced that Edwards consumed alcohol and cocaine before his heart attack, which led to cocaine poisoning and subsequent cardiac arrhythmia. This is reported, for example, with reference to the investigation report of the London court.
Brenda Edwards: “Unpredictable Substances”
After initial investigations in June, Brenda Edwards wrote that shortly before his death, her son was taking recreational drugs that caused abnormal heart rhythms. “These types of substances” are “unpredictable,” says Brenda Edwards, and it’s important to talk about them. “Jamal is proof that this can happen to anyone.”
Numerous stars publicly said goodbye to the musician in February. For his services to the music scene, Jamal Edwards was appointed MBE by the British royal family in 2015, Member of the Order of the British Empire. In addition to his career as a musician and entrepreneur, he campaigned for education about mental illness.
