People: John Legend on Friendship End with Kanye West

At the beginning of their careers, today’s superstars were not only close professionally, but also privately. That is now over – also for political reasons.

Grammy award winner John Legend (43, “Bigger Love”) blames political differences for the end of his friendship with rapper Kanye West (45).

West resented him for not supporting his candidacy in the US presidential campaign, Legend said on CNN commentator David Axelrod’s recent podcast episode “The Ax Files.” The pop and soul musician also cited West’s support for Donald Trump. “I think it just got too much to keep our friendship going,” Legend said. They would not be close since then.

Rapper West was one of a handful of popular artists to publicly endorse Trump in the past. In 2018 he met Trump at the White House wearing a baseball hat with his campaign slogan “Make America Great Again”. In 2020, West ran for the office of US President himself. However, due to missed registration deadlines, he did not make it onto the ballot in most states. West is more likely to cause a stir with bizarre messages on his social media. According to media reports, he has had mental problems for years.

Legend and West were close early in their music careers and collaborated on songs. Legend was also a guest at West and Kim Kardashian’s wedding in Italy in 2014. The couple is now divorced.

Legend and his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, 36, are expecting their third child. The ultra-liberal couple are known as sharp Trump critics.
