in the special The Walking Dead Universe Preview 2022 on AMC on Sunday night, series creator and showrunner Scott M. Gimple gave new details.

“It’s been a lot of fun working on it,” Gimple told the host. Chris Hardwick. “I’ve been working very, very thoroughly with Danai and with Andy, and we continue to work on it almost every day along with some veterans of The Walking Dead and some great new voices.”

As for how would you describe the story? “It’s an epic love story”Gimple noted. “But it’s a crazy, epic love story. These are two people who have been apart for a long time. They’ve lived completely different existences and they need to find each other again, let alone each other. And hopefully it’s going to be awesome.”

Lest anyone worry that the dynamic duo has mellowed with age, Gimple hinted that we’ll be seeing the characters at their most extreme. “We see this incredible power couple, but we also see Red Machete Rick. We see Michonne who taught the Governor a thing or two. She goes coast to coast in that way between the intimate, the epic, and the crazy.”

Movies about Rick Grimes

While it has been a long and winding road for Rick Grimes, it has also been a long and winding road to bring his story back to the screen.

In 2018 after the last episode of The Walking Dead it was announced that Lincoln and the character would appear in a trilogy of Rick Grimes films.

“We’re going to tell the story of what happens after that helicopter flight, and these are going to be big, epic entertainment,” Gimple said at the time. “I’m working really hard on the first one right now, and I’ll most likely shoot next year.”

Then, at the end of the show’s next Comic-Con appearance in July 2019, a short teaser video was shown with the words “Rick Grimes returns. Only in theaters.” After the clip played, panel moderator Hardwick announced that “The Walking Dead movie is official. It’s in theaters, presented by Universal, AMC and Skybound. More info to come.”

That is no longer the case. Now the epic and wacky story is coming to the small screen in 2023 on AMC. He will be joined by the upcoming Daryl Dixon spin-off (Norman Reedus), which Gimple revealed will take place in France. During the special, Gimple also acknowledged that the series will be based on the coda scene from The Walking Dead: World Beyondwhich showed a French lab studying walkers who appeared to be stronger and faster.
