With the words: “O’zapft is”, the largest festival in the world should have started in September 2021. But then came Corona and with the virus the ban on major events. However, that does not mean that you are not allowed to celebrate your own Oktoberfest in a small group at home.
It is October 12th, 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese say yes in Munich. On the occasion of their wedding, there are days of celebrations in the Bavarian capital – in private as well as in public: Among other things, a horse race will take place on October 17th, which is known as the birth of the Oktoberfest. Today the event revolves around one thing in particular: culinary delights, carousels and clothing. The latter is of particular importance, because traditional costumes have a long tradition on Theresienwiese – which unfortunately will not be the venue for the largest folk festival in the world due to the corona crisis this year. If you still don’t want to miss the event, you can also spray a little Bavarian flair at home. All you need is a little Oktoberfest decoration and the right Oktoberfest outfit.
The dirndl
The traditional costume is usually cut a little longer, however, are significantly shorter or “only” knee-length. Which model you ultimately choose is of course up to you – a real Oktoberfest outfit consists of the following components (in addition to the dress): the dirndl blouse, a dirndl bra, a dirndl apron, a dirndl jacket and a dirndl Shoes.
The blouse
Women usually wear a classic dirndl under the dirndl , although significantly more colors have been added in recent years – and the materials can also vary. Currently in trend are above all or with lace applications, which are usually deeply cut to emphasize the cleavage. But here, too, you can decide according to your own taste and one too Choose a dirndl blouse. In any case, it is recommended to wear a white blouse with a colorful dirndl and a colored blouse with a simple dirndl.
Der BH
If you want to emphasize your cleavage, you can wear a special dirndl bra. In contrast to a normal push-up, which only pushes your breasts upwards, this one has a strong underbust bar to lift your breasts. The balcony cut also has the advantage that no bra cups or bra straps can be seen if you opt for a deep neckline.
The skirt
Most dirndls are already equipped with an apron, but you can vary this too. In any case, it is important that it ends with the hem length of the dress. The dirndl bow has a special meaning – more precisely the way in which it is tied: right means that you are taken. So in love, engaged or married (because the wedding ring is also worn on the right). Links means that you are still looking or single. If the bow is tied in the middle, it is said that the woman is still a virgin – these days, however, the dirndl bow is only tied in the middle for children. A last option would be to tie the bow in the middle at the back, but only widowed women do that.
The jacket
Since most of the attractions at Oktoberfest take place outdoors, you should never leave the house without a jacket. Even if the Oktoberfest starts at the end of September, that is by no means a guarantee for warm temperatures. So that you don’t have to hide your beautiful outfit under an ordinary jacket, there are special dirndl jackets (so-called ) made of milled sheep’s wool – but the material also has its price. Alternatively, there are many nice ones in different colors that also keep you warm.
The accessories
Anything you like is allowed here. Accessories are particularly popular or with flowers that are either worked directly into the hairstyle or simply put on the head. Another classic is the so-called , which should adorn the neck and emphasize the cleavage. When it comes to jewelry, Oktoberfest hearts or traditional ones are very popular and . And even with the handbag there is with edelweiss motifs – an alpine flower.
The shoes
There are no special traditional shoes for women in this sense, but in recent years certain models have largely prevailed, which are above all one thing: comfortable. In principle, this applies to everyone or flat shoes like ballerinas. Because the fact is: If you spend the whole day at Oktoberfest, dancing and swaying, strolling and strolling, you will feel your feet more clearly than ever in the evening. If you still don’t want to do without your high heels, pumps are still the better choice than high heels. What is not at all appropriate at the Oktoberfest, however, are sneakers or boots. Here you risk critical looks.
The haircut
Again, there are no guidelines on how you should wear your hair – but if you want to keep up with the trend, braided hairstyles are your best bet. Regardless of whether you simply braid your hair into a normal or two braids, tie a traditional wreath or peasant braid or conjure up a tricky herringbone braid: there is no right or wrong.
The leather pants
At the first Oktoberfest in 1810 people wore lederhosen, but it wasn’t until the end of the 20th century that they really became socially acceptable. Nowadays, underwear made of deer or cow leather is not only a welcome item of clothing at the Oktoberfest – in Bavaria traditional trousers have long been part of everyday clothing and are worn in many places. The special thing about it is first and foremost the robust material that can withstand external influences. Besides that the also keeps you warm. So it’s hardly surprising why you see more and more women at Oktoberfest who prefer to be feminine than to wear a dirndl. And this is how the Oktoberfest outfit for men is completed:
The shirt
Similar to the Bavarian flag, there are also checked patterns on many traditional shirts. It doesn’t matter which color you prefer – every shirt looks good in combination with leather pants. However, above all dominate , and Models every year anew the Oktoberfest.
The calf warmers
In Bavaria they are only called Loferl, Stutzn or Beinhösl: the calf warmers. They are worn below the knee on the lower legs to accentuate the calves. The material is usually made of wool to keep the legs warm. According to tradition, the not combined with socks, but exclusively with invisible socks that are worn in traditional shoes. Sneakers, sandals and sneakers are considered no-go when wearing short leather pants.
The shoes
For men, traditional shoes are a must at the Oktoberfest. They were invented in the Allgäu, more precisely around 1800 – by Franz Schratt. The Oberstdorf shoemaker recognized the need for sturdy shoes made of leather, which (in contrast to wooden shoes) should give the wearer more security when walking. This resulted in the so-called , which is still a household name in Bavaria today. And it is not only worn by the local residents at the Oktoberfest, but also by many visitors who want to present a genuine Oktoberfest outfit.
The leather care
Real leather pants are extremely resistant and durable. But after the Oktoberfest at the latest, the material has soaked up with roast fat, beer or sweat. The “greasy feeling” is somehow part of it and is supposed to make the trousers even smoother in the long term, but a thorough cleaning every now and then does not harm. Especially when the material hardens due to the high level of pollution. The delicate leather has absolutely no place in the washing machine; instead, you should treat the leather with a special one edit to remove the coarse dirt. If you prefer to wash the trousers, you have to do this by hand – but do not use hot water under any circumstances, as this hardens leather! Take only lukewarm water and a curd soap, then the pants are air-dried. Or you can leave the cleaning to a professional.
