He started his career as a stand-up comedian. But without his longtime friend, Steve Martin would rather quit the film and comedy business.
US comedian Steve Martin is considering retiring after completing his current projects. The 76-year-old told the industry magazine “Hollywood Reporter”, which was published on Wednesday (local time).
“We were very happy just doing the live show,” Martin said of his ongoing tour, “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” with longtime friend and colleague Martin Short. “There might be a natural ending – someone gets sick, someone just can’t take it anymore – but I wouldn’t do it without Marty.”
Likewise, his role in the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, in which he also appears alongside Short, could be his last. “When this TV show is over, I won’t look for any other films. I won’t bother with other films. I don’t want to do cameos. That’s it, oddly enough.”
Instead, he wants to spend more time with his family. “I have a family life that’s really fun,” Martin said. “I’m not ready to do a film now, to live somewhere else. I can’t disappear for three months.” His wife is still skeptical that he won’t find a new project after all.
Martin started his career as a stand-up comedian. He later appeared in various comedy shows and made films such as Wealth Is No Shame and Father of the Bride. In 2013 he received an honorary Oscar for his life’s work. Martin is married for the second time and has a nine-year-old daughter.
