Denise Richards recently guest-starred on the Divorced Not Dead podcast. Host Caroline Stanbury chatted about her then-marriage to Hollywood star Charlie Sheen, now best known for drug abuse and behind-the-camera antics. From this marriage two daughters were born. Sami is now 18 and Lola is 17. However, Richards left Sheen in 2006 when she was six months pregnant with Lola.
In the podcast, Richards now told about the moment that was to change her life at the time. One day, the actress asked herself a very special question: “Would I want my daughters to be married to this man?”. The sad answer was obviously no, and so Richards ended the marriage. Shortly after the couple’s divorce, Richards filed for a restraining order against Sheen as well as full custody of their two daughters. Although she has since had legal custody, she has always made an effort to allow the girls to see their father. Still, she made sure Sheen was in reasonable shape when it came to meeting his daughters. “There’s a lot the public doesn’t know and you never know what’s going on behind closed doors,” Richards said.

The 51-year-old always tried to assess the situation. “I wanted them to know their father, not what they can read about him,” Sheen’s ex-wife said. Nevertheless, the actress is unsure whether she has always done a good job as a mother. Even after their marriage, despite problems, they always tried to form a unit as parents with Charlie Sheen. She didn’t want the girls to feel insecure about the problems between the former couple. Today Denise Richards would probably have acted differently, but she also says: “There really is no manual for that, especially when you are in the public eye”.
Despite this, she has no regrets about her marriage to Charlie Sheen and justifies it with her children: “Because I really believe that he and I were brought together to have our daughters.”
