Brazilian football legend Pelé has been admitted to hospital. But he has already given the all-clear.
Brazil’s football legend Pelé (80) was admitted to a hospital in São Paulo, Brazil on Tuesday (August 31). Like the three-time world champion (1958, 1962 and 1970), this is only a visit for routine examinations and he is fine.
“Folks, I didn’t faint and I’m in good health. I’m only here for routine checkups that I couldn’t have before because of the pandemic,” explains Pelé. The 80-year-old jokingly adds: “Tell them I won’t play next Sunday!”
Pelé’s health hit the headlines
Pelé’s health has made headlines several times in recent years. The Brazilian top scorer (77 goals in 92 international matches) had to undergo several hip operations, had problems with his spine and knee and suffered a urinary tract infection in 2019.
For some public appearances, Pelé also used a wheelchair or walker. Reports that he suffered from depression because of his health problems were firmly denied by Pelé last year.
