Princess Amalia renounces student fraternity – because of sexism scandal

A video of members of a Dutch student fraternity has apparently made Princess Amalia not want to attend the fraternity after all. The chairman of the association is also planning to resign.

In the fall of this year, the Dutch Crown Princess Amalia will begin her studies at the University of Amsterdam. As part of this, she planned to join a fraternity – just like her father did when he was a student. “I would like to become a member of a student fraternity. I don’t know which one yet, but I’m really looking forward to it,” said Amalia, the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, in June.

She doesn’t seem to have that wish anymore – at least with regard to the student fraternity ASC/AVSV (the Amsterdam student corps and the Amsterdam female student association). The Dutch government’s press office announced that the Crown Princess will not become a member of the association without giving specific reasons. ASC/AVSV recently made headlines with a video in which male liaison members made disparaging comments about women.

President of the fraternity thinks about resigning

“Women were treated as whores at a party […] designated. This is an environment in which a future Queen of the Netherlands should not be at the moment,” Gala quotes nobility expert Peter Rehwinkel as saying.

In addition, the leader of the association, Heleen Vos, announced that she intends to resign after the controversial statements became public. “As principal, I can no longer and will no longer accept responsibility for incidents and the behavior of members that go beyond my personal boundaries,” said Vos.

Subsequent membership in an association conceivable

Insiders don’t rule out the possibility that the 18-year-old crown princess will join one of the 60 or so smaller associations in Amsterdam. “It’s quite possible that she wants to concentrate on her studies in the first year. Also, the move from The Hague to Amsterdam will also have some impact. Maybe that’s why she wants to acclimatize in Amsterdam first,” says Justine Marcella, Editor-in-chief of Vorsten magazine.

Amalia will start her bachelor’s degree in politics, psychology, law and economics (PPLE) in the coming semester. “There is an application and selection process for the study, which the Princess of Orange went through in full last year. She will live in Amsterdam from September. The Crown Princess’ study period is considered private,” said the Dutch royal family in the spring .
