Rolf Eden passed away at the age of 92

German businessman and former nightclub owner Rolf Eden has died at the age of 92. He was known as Berlin’s last playboy and appeared mainly in white suits.

Its clubs were once the center of Berlin nightlife: Eden Saloon, New Eden, Eden Playboy Club, Big Eden – and their owner soon became a center of German society. As reported by his relatives, Rolf Eden died this Thursday. “In gratitude for a long and fulfilling life, we must now say goodbye,” they announced, according to the “Bild” newspaper.

Rolf Eden has always been a bon vivant, interested in the beautiful things in life, in amusement. But even if his decadent lifestyle sometimes seemed a bit arrogant – he once demanded a Rolls Royce lane instead of a bus lane in traffic – he still stood up for less well-off people.

Nightclubs made Rolf Eden rich and famous

Eden, who was born into a Jewish family in Berlin, worked his way up with numerous jobs. First as a musician in Berlin, then in the early 1950s in Paris as a waiter, chauffeur and car dealer. He took on his first extra roles in film productions, later also supporting roles. Then his chance came: in 1956 he read in the newspaper that every West Berliner living abroad would receive 6,000 marks (about 15,000 euros today) if they came back to Berlin. Eden did that and used the money to open his first club, the Eden Saloon.

The disco became so successful that numerous others followed and he became the playboy of Berlin’s nightlife. Eden lived an openly promiscuous life, which is consistent with the fact that women’s bare skin became an important part of his stores. The female employees waited shirtless in his establishments. He sold his last shop 20 years ago, but the shops didn’t survive long without him. Rolf Eden invested his money primarily in real estate and also worked as an actor in around 30 films.
