Her fate touches millions of people around the world: American actress Anne Heche has been brain dead since Friday after a serious car accident. Several US media had previously reported, citing the 53-year-old’s spokesman, that she was “not expected to survive”. Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury when her car crashed into a Los Angeles apartment building on August 5.

It’s not the first tragedy in the family of the actress, who was born in Aurora, Ohio in 1969. Her brother died in a car accident: when she was 14, the then 18-year-old crashed his car into a tree.

Anne Heche had a bad childhood

By then her father was already dead. Donald Heche, a professional choirmaster and priest, had died of AIDS shortly before. The father of five, a fundamentalist Christian, led a double life and secretly lived out his homosexuality. He was one of the first US citizens to be diagnosed with HIV.

She suffered from her father all her life. In her autobiography “Call Me Crazy”, published in September 2001, she reported that she had been sexually abused by him in her childhood. The priest is said to have even transmitted venereal diseases to his youngest daughter.

Anne Heche managed to put her difficult childhood behind her and pursued an impressive acting career. She has appeared in box office hits such as ‘Wag the Dog’ and was cast by Gus Van Sandt as Marion Crane in his remake of Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’.

Her private life was characterized by ups and downs. From 1994 she was in a relationship with her fellow actor Steve Martin, whom she left in 1997 for presenter Ellen DeGeneres. After the relationship ended, she married cameraman Coley Laffoon in 2001, and their son was born in 2002. The marriage broke up in 2007, in the same year she met actor James Tupper, with whom she starred in the TV series “Men in Trees”. The relationship lasted until 2018, and she also had a son who was born in 2009.

She will now share the fate of losing a parent at an early age with her two sons.
