Hollywood: Golden Globes: German re-elected as President

For more than 80 years, an association recently criticized for its lack of diversity has been awarding the Golden Globes. It is headed by a German journalist – big tasks lie ahead of her.

German journalist Helen Hoehne has been re-elected President of the Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in Hollywood. The association, which has been awarding the Golden Globe trophies since the 1940s, announced this on Friday. Born in Hamburg, she first took office in September 2021 and promised reforms with goals such as more diversity and transparency.

The small organization of Hollywood-based foreign journalists was under great pressure to reform at the time, mainly because of questionable practices, allegations of corruption and a lack of diversity. At the time, there was not a single black member on the panel of almost 100 journalists. Many stars criticized heavily, companies suspended the cooperation. The broadcaster NBC canceled the traditional TV broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards for January 2022.

At the end of July, the members voted for a new business model. Accordingly, the investment firm Eldridge Industries will now run the Golden Globe Awards as a private for-profit organization, while the HFPA association will continue its philanthropic work with donations to charitable causes as a so-called non-profit organization. As part of the restructuring, the pool of Golden Globe jurors is also to be further enlarged and more diverse. Nothing is known about the format of the Golden Globe Awards next year.
