The German Television Award will return to the screen as a big show in 2021. It is now known who can hope for the trophy. One thing is clear: the pandemic has also left its mark on the program.
ZDF talker Markus Lanz has been nominated for the German Television Award. The 52-year-old competes for the coveted trophy with his talk show named after him, “Markus Lanz”, in the traditional journalist category “Best Information”.
The jury announced this on Wednesday in Cologne. In the info section, the nomination definitely stands out. Two classic political magazines were nominated together with Lanz: “Frontal” (ZDF) and “Panorama” (ARD / NDR).
In appreciation of the talker, it was said that Lanz had “provided information, classification and orientation” in the “confusing continuous fire of the pronouncements and ordinances of the 2020/21 corona year” in his evening rounds of talks. That was an “important contribution to social discourse, especially in times of lockdown”.
In total, the nominees from 28 categories were announced on Wednesday. Whoever wins the television award will be revealed at an open-air show in Cologne on September 16. The award ceremony, moderated by Barbara Schöneberger (47), can be seen on RTL on the same evening from 8.15 p.m. onwards. Last year there were prizes because of the pandemic, but no gala.
What is also remarkable about the 2020/2021 award is that the two entertainers Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf were nominated with two entries in the same category. You are competing with yourself, so to speak. In the “Best Infotainment” category, they compete with “Joko & Klaas 15 minutes: Men’s Worlds” as well as “Joko & Klaas – Live: Care is # not self-evident” (both ProSieben). On March 31, the two moderators had their station show the everyday life of a nurse in real time. The result: eight hours of unprecedented reality television.
If you go by the productions with the most nominations, the brewery multi-part series “Oktoberfest 1900” (ARD) and the drama series “Para – Wir sind King” are the big favorites of this year’s television award. Both have five nominations each, including for the actors.
“Oktoberfest 1900” actor Mišel Matičević can hope for an award for “Best Actor”, Soma Pysall from “Para – Wir sind King” for the award for “Best Actress”. The TNT series comes from the creators of the successful “4 Blocks” and is about four friends who grew up in rough Berlin’s Wedding. They get into the drug business more by chance.
The German Television Prize has been awarded since 1999 for outstanding television performance. It is donated by RTL, ZDF, Sat.1, ARD and Deutsche Telekom. The jury includes actress and producer Maria Furtwängler (54).
“Despite the pandemic-related restrictions in production, the jury saw a great variety of topics and materials in excellent implementation in all genres,” said the jury chairman Wolf Bauer, summarizing the selection process. “A remarkable achievement by the creative team, which under the special circumstances of the year cannot be valued highly enough.”
