Amber Heard: Elaine Bredehoft resigns from legal team

Amber Heard’s fight against her ex-husband Johnny Depp isn’t over yet. In late July, the actress appealed the decision of a Virginia court. She will be supported in the new lawsuit by an expanded and new team of attorneys.

Elaine Bredehoft, as Amber Heard’s attorney, didn’t always cut a confident figure in court in Virginia. On the Internet, the well-known lawyer was often ridiculed by Depp’s fans and degraded to the subject of memes and jokes. Now she has resigned as the Aquaman actress’ attorney.

Amber Heard will be represented by new attorneys

Heard relies on two new attorneys, David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown, for the coming months. The two represented the New York Times in a defamation case in February and won. Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin failed in her lawsuit against the newspaper.

Axelrod and Brown specialize in cases involving the First Amendment to the United States Constitution: the article dealing with freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

In early June, Johnny Depp won the defamation lawsuit against Heard after around six weeks of trial. He had sued her for $50 million for an article she published in the newspaper in 2018. In it, she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. She did not mention her ex-husband by name. Depp nevertheless claimed the post ruined his career, damaged his reputation and cost him a lot of money. Heard had always invoked the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Without Elaine Bredehoft

Bredehoft said it was “the perfect time to pass the baton on”. Attorney Ben Rottenborn remains on Amber Heard’s team while she steps down from her duties as defense attorney. “When it comes to protecting the fundamental right to freedom of expression, we do not view the jury’s decision – to paraphrase a famous quote – as ‘the beginning of the end, but merely the end of the beginning’. Another court justifies a different account, especially now that so much new evidence is coming to light,” a Heard spokesman said.
