A great moment for new music

The Sunday matinee with the OÖ. The David Trio – Sabine Reiter (violin), Peter Aigner (viola) and Andreas Pözlberger (violoncello) – is a fixture at the Donaufestwochen in Strudengau and once again attracted a large audience to Dornach Castle near Saxen. The program also has a long tradition, with mostly music from the 20th and 21st centuries, the focus of which is the work of the eponymous artist – Johann Nepomuk David. Also on this Sunday one of his string trios was heard, into whose world the David Trio has completely penetrated and brings the music of the most important Upper Austrian composer after Bruckner out of its academic corner and the compositionally extremely skilfully created fact of the “Jacobo Stainer” Trio op. 33 /4 filled with the deepest emotions.

The concert began with the “Drei Ariosi für Streichtrio”, which Balduin Sulzer composed in 1988 and which perfectly represent his incomparable idea of the simultaneity of musical depth and tongue-in-cheek liveliness. The “Nine Bagatelles” designed by Friedrich Cerha in 2008 are also miniatures. Nine small ideas that consciously refuse to be processed intensively and skillfully challenge the unbelievable variety of sounds of a string trio.

moment of remembrance

Music can not only be entertainment or abstract, profound art, it can also be a moment of remembrance. And that is what the String Trio op. 75 by Thomas Daniel Schlee does, who composed this work in 2008 in memory of his great teacher Olivier Messiaen. In the second movement, whose title “Invocation” is aimed entirely at the master of tonal ecstasy and colorful stimuli, Schlee combines scales of Messiaens with the key of C minor, which expresses the sadness most strongly, and thus creates a sound cosmos of compelling emotional depth.

A finely storming Allégresse is followed by further commemorative music dedicated to Darius Milhaud, whom Schlee met as a child, and which in this movement delicately connects his person with the colorful atmosphere of Provence. Four great compositions, which were implemented no less brilliantly by the David Trio. (wuss)
