Turns out Gilligan was right. Albuquerque-based conservative radio host Eddy Aragon and Republican state representative Rod Montoya they are two public figures who publicly condemned the statues.
“I’m glad New Mexico has the business, but really?” Montoya recently told Fox News. “Are we going down the path of literally glorifying meth manufacturers?”
“It’s not the kind of recognition we want for the city of Albuquerque or for our state,” added Aragon, noting that “what you saw in ‘Breaking Bad’ should be a documentary, honestly. I think, really, that’s the reality in New Mexico. We try to say it’s fictitious, but that’s the reality… we joke that [‘Breaking Bad’] should be on PBS. That is, sadly, the reality.”
Aragon criticized the state for erecting statues of breaking bad after he decided to tear down a statue of the Spanish conquistador Juan de Onatewho was the first Spanish governor of New Mexico.
“Now we have new statues,” said Aragón. “Now we are putting fictional characters at the forefront. We have Jesse Pinkman and of course Heisenberg, and now we have erected statues and our progressive mayor of the city of Albuquerque has endorsed them. We’re funding them, so it’s okay to get rid of real historical figures and now, in a way, it’s even better, [tener] fictitious figures of drug traffickers”.
The Mayor of Albuquerque, Tim Kellersaid it was appropriate to erect statues of breaking bad given the positive economic impact the Gilligan-created series has had on the city over the years. He added, “While the stories may be fictional… the jobs are real every day. The city is also a character… We see ourselves in many ways, good and bad.”
