Harald Schmidt celebrates and excludes TV comeback

Eight years ago, Harald Schmidt said goodbye to television, today the former king of late-night talk is celebrating his 65th birthday. A comeback on the screen is out of the question for the celebrant. “No, definitely not,” Schmidt said in an interview when asked if the retro wave might not flush him onto television again. Schmidt prefers to concentrate on the theater: from September 3 he will appear at the Vienna Volksoper in “Die Dubarry” as Ludwig XV. on. He doesn’t want to celebrate his birthday big today: “It’s possible that we’ll just do a little table fireworks as part of ‘We must all save’. ‘Rhein in Flammen’ doesn’t work because there’s no water.”

Harald Schmidt still has eight months until he can officially retire. However, his pension entitlements are rather manageable, according to his own statements, he is entitled to 272 euros a month. The reason: “I was a freelancer most of the time, but I paid in full for 15 years to get a mini-pension.” Schmidt plans to take advantage of this. “I’ll collect that too, I’ve paid in, I’m entitled to it,” said the 65-year-old. “It’s not charity, it’s a deal I made with the state. Bring it on!”
