Because of the relaxation of the Corona measures, shops were allowed to receive more people again in May. This is also reflected in retail sales, as data shows.
The retail trade in Germany is doing better again in May thanks to the increasing relaxation of the corona restrictions.
From April to May of the current year, sales rose both in real terms (plus 4.2 percent) and in nominal terms (plus 4.5 percent), as calculated by the Federal Statistical Office.
“This development is likely to be related to the nationwide falling corona incidence and the associated relaxation of the federal emergency brake,” the Wiesbaden statisticians explain on Thursday. In April, the federal and state governments put uniform nationwide rules into effect for high numbers of corona infections. This “federal emergency brake” in the Infection Protection Act was limited until June 30, depending on the regional development of the corona numbers, there had already been easing.
Compared to May 2020, revenues fell by 2.4 percent in real terms and by 0.6 percent in nominal terms. However, May 2021 with 23 sales days also had one less sales day than the same month last year. Looking at the year as a whole, the retail sector is up: From January to May inclusive, sales were 0.4 percent in real terms and 1.9 percent higher in nominal terms than in the same period of the previous year.
