After her serious car accident, Anne Heche was in a coma for a week until she was declared brain dead and the devices were switched off. Now the coroner has released his preliminary autopsy report.
Almost a week after her death, Anne Heche’s last hours still raise questions. The coroner’s report has now shed some light on the matter. Accordingly, Heche died as a result of inhaling smoke and thermal injuries. Burns (or frostbite) are referred to as “thermal injuries”.

The agency’s report also mentions a “breastbone fracture due to blunt trauma”. Such a sternum fracture is common when patients are trapped behind the wheel of their car. Heche’s death was officially classified as an “accident”.
The actress, who became known through major cinema productions in the 1990s, drove her car into a house on August 5, which was completely destroyed. Her car caught fire and it took some time for firefighters to extricate Heche from it.
Tragic car accident
On August 12 – after a week in a coma – she was pronounced brain dead. Last Sunday, after recipients for Heche’s organs were found, the life support machines were turned off.
Fox News recently published the 911 call that police received after Heche crashed into the home. A “car (has) just driven through my neighbor’s house,” the caller can be heard. It was only at second glance that one recognized that there was still a person in the accident car. “Someone is trapped in the car. It’s a big fire,” the caller said.
It took firefighters over an hour to put out the fire. By then, Heche had already sustained serious injuries. Although the actress was immediately taken to the hospital, she could not be saved. She leaves behind two sons aged 13 and 20. “Hopefully my mom is free of pain and begins to explore what I envision as her eternal freedom,” the older of the two told People magazine.
