‘I wish I’d handled it differently’: Actress Zoë Kravitz has opened up about her comments on the Will Smith Oscars scandal. At the time, she received a lot of backlash for her criticism.
It was the moment of scandal at this year’s Oscars: Will Smith unexpectedly entered the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock, cursing loudly, after he had made a joke at the expense of Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. The Hollywood celebrities in the hall reacted in shock – but did not intervene. Only a few commented on the moment afterwards. One of them was actress Zoë Kravitz.
Posting photos of the red carpet and her Oscars look on Instagram, she commented, “Here’s a picture of my dress at the event where it seems we’re now attacking people on stage.” When asked by a user if she didn’t think Smith should defend his wife, she replied, “Nope.” Kravitz received a lot of criticism for her stance, including rehashing an old shitstorm about semi-salacious comments she once made about Smith’s then 14-year-old son. Eventually she deleted the posts. Now she spoke about it for the first time.
Kravitz draws consequences from Shitstorm
“I’m torn about what to say because I should just talk about it, but I have very mixed feelings about this whole thing,” she told the Wall Street Journal before expressing regret. “I wish I had handled it differently.” She apparently drew consequences from the public criticism. “It’s a scary time to have an opinion, or to say the wrong thing, or to have controversial art, statements, thoughts, or anything,” Kravitz said. This is especially scary because art is about stimulating conversation.
She was reminded that she was an artist. “I’m at a point in my life where I don’t want to express myself through a caption or a tweet. I want to express myself through my art.” The Internet is the opposite of entertainment.
