Norwegian royal family: Extremely popular: Crown Princess Mette-Marit turns 49

Mette-Marit met her current husband, the Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon, at a festival. Together they have gained a lot of sympathy points from the Norwegians

For more than 20 years, the Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon has been taken. He met his current wife at the Quart Festival. Together they have summarized their relationship in the media in recent weeks. To this day they are a happy couple who like to show themselves in public.

But Haakon’s election was viewed critically by the Norwegian people for a long time. The new one at his side was already a mother and also not a blank slate with the police because of her party stories. But so be it – where love falls. This Friday (August 19) the Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit will be 49 years old.

Haakon and Mette-Marit: more popular than ever

As difficult as the start was, the royal couple is now so popular. In general, the Norwegian royal family is one of the most popular in the world. The people stand behind the institution. And not only the citizens of Norway were skeptical. “I cried for two days when I saw my past on the front pages for the first time,” said the Crown Princess when she first experienced the media attention.

But now she has been able to fully devote herself to royal life. Mette-Marit is a patron of various organizations, including the Norwegian Red Cross. Since April 2006 she has also been the UN Special Envoy for UNAIDS, a United Nations aid project.

A rebel from a good family

But Mette-Marit, whose real name is Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, of course also had a life before the royal family. The Crown Princess, born in Kristiansland in 1973, comes from a sheltered background. Her father was a journalist and publisher, her mother a bank clerk. She has three older siblings.

But because in her youth she found herself more at parties than studying at her desk at home, she did not complete her Abitur until late. She was only able to graduate in 1994. A treat for the media, who tried to scandalize their party past.

Over the next few years, she attended a number of universities and tried her hand at various courses. On January 13, 1997, their first son was born. She was able to take him to the royal family despite great resistance from the people and the media. On August 25, 2001, she and Crown Prince Haakon were married in Oslo Cathedral. The couple now have two children together.

strokes of fate and many interests

It has been known since 2018 that Mette-Marit suffers from chronic pulmonary fibrosis. Her stepbrother, who was a police officer, was shot dead in the July 22, 2011 assassination attempt on Utoya island.

Mette-Marit was already interested in ballet and volleyball when he was young. She was a girl scout and went to the choir. She later released a record for a hymn album. Today she is interested in art and culture.
