Queen Elizabeth II: granddaughter Louise works for minimum wage

Queen Elizabeth II: granddaughter Louise works for minimum wage

Her parents live in a luxurious royal estate. That’s not stopping the Queen’s granddaughter Louise Mountbatten-Windsor from earning a few extra pounds: she works in a garden center for minimum wage.

The customers of the English garden center were amazed when they noticed who was behind the cash register: Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, none other than Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughter, was serving them. As reported by several British media, the 18-year-old is only supposed to earn £6.83 there, the equivalent of EUR 8.07, which corresponds to the statutory minimum wage in this age group.

Lady Louise Windsor: Her father is the Queen’s youngest son

An unusual occupation, since her parents live in the posh royal residence of Bagshot Park in Surrey, 18 kilometers south of Windsor. Louise is the daughter of Edward, the Queen’s youngest son. The willingness to work of the young blue-blooded girl was very well received by many customers: “She is really a modest and nice young woman who is polite and attentive to customers,” said a visitor to the British newspaper “The Sun”.

Another customer responded with typically British humor: “I knew the cost of living had risen sharply, but I didn’t think the Queen’s granddaughter would have to work in a garden centre.”

However, the job will not last forever: Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor, as the Royal Highness is called by her full name, is currently bridging the time between graduating from school and starting her studies. From September she will move to St. Andrews, Scotland. She attends the same university where Prince William and Duchess Kate met and fell in love. Louise will study English there.

Apparently, the 18-year-old used the meantime to familiarize herself with working life. Author Ingrid Seward was full of praise: “Isn’t it wonderful that the Queen’s granddaughter rolled up her sleeves and got her hands dirty at a summer job before going to university — just like any other normal teenager?” she asked Royal expert. Most Brits would probably agree.
