Universities: Vaccination offers for students planned from autumn

Now that the majority of the elderly and other priority groups have been vaccinated, politics is now focusing on younger people. Chancellery Minister Braun wants to involve students more from autumn.

In the fight against the spread of the delta variant of the corona virus, politicians are increasingly focusing on the younger generation.

Chancellery Minister Helge Braun (CDU) told the newspapers of the Neue Berliner Redaktionsgesellschaft as well as the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” (Thursday): “Between the federal and state governments, for example, we have agreed to make vaccination programs easily accessible at the universities at the start of the semester.”

Braun is also relying on the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) to give up its previous reluctance to recommend vaccinations for young people. “Based on the further experience with the vaccination campaigns in other countries, such as the USA, among 12 to 15 year olds, I hope that we may come to a broader recommendation for children from the age of 12 by the Standing Vaccination Commission.”

The Stiko has not yet issued a general vaccination recommendation for children and adolescents aged 12 and over. She recommends vaccinations only for 12 to 17 year olds with certain pre-existing conditions. The committee justified its recommendation, among other things, with the fact that the risk of severe Covid 19 disease for this age group is low.

Braun said the Delta variant will be the majority variant in Germany in the next few weeks. «We cannot prevent that. But we can prevent it from spreading too much, ”he explained. “The more citizens are fully vaccinated by autumn, the shallower the delta wave will be.” An immunity of 75 to 80 percent of the population is necessary.
