In her new podcast “Archetypes”, Duchess Meghan spoke about the pressure of work as an official royal. So she was forced to make an appointment after a fire in Archie’s nursery.
In her new Spotify podcast “Archetypes”, Duchess Meghan talked to Serena Williams about a previously unknown experience in 2019. At that time, she and her husband Prince Harry were still officially traveling as members of the British royal family, traveling to appointments in South Africa. A frightening situation arose there: there was a fire in the children’s room of the then four-month-old son Archie.
The moment of shock happened shortly after arrival. Meghan and Harry dropped the little one off at the accommodation with his nanny, then it went to the first appointment, as Meghan said in the first episode of the podcast. When they got back into the car afterwards, they received the message: “There was a fire in the residence. […] There was a fire in the baby’s room.” They then rushed there. “We’re coming back and our amazing nanny Lauren […] was in tears,” the Duchess recalled.
Harry and Meghan carried on despite the fire
The nanny was going to put little Archie down for a nap but decided to take the baby with her when she went to get a snack. Luckily, Archie wasn’t in the room when a fire broke out on a radiator. “There was no smoke detector,” Meghan said. Luckily, someone in the hallway smelled the smoke and eventually put out the fire.
As a mother, she thought after arriving: “Oh, my God, what?” All had been dissolved. But the pressure to keep going was obviously great. “And what do we have to do? Go out and have another official appointment? I said, ‘That doesn’t make any sense. […] Can’t you just tell people what happened?'” Meghan shared.
Although the royal family later moved to other accommodation, they had to leave Archie, now three years old, to continue working. “I couldn’t have done that,” Williams commented on the incident.
Perhaps this experience also cemented Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down as senior members of the royal family. Along with Archie, the pair left Harry’s native UK in 2020 for North America. In the summer of 2021, their daughter Lilibet was born in the USA. The family lives in Montecito, California.
