She added: “I wish my parents were alive. My mother in particular would be very proud of this because she wanted me to go to college.. I went to art school and quit after a year. She thought of me as a dropout. So seeing this achievement would be really impressive for her. I wish I could share it with her.”

“Since her debut in the late 1960s, Joni has been a force for change in the industry,” said the Berklee president, Erica Mühlduring his presentation. “One of the great musical artists in the world.”
Terri Lyne Carringtonfounder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, also reflected: “I am delighted that we can finally honor Joni Mitchell. Her career and her social principles represent the values that our institute pursues: imagination, freedom, equality and identity. I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more.”
The evening featured musical performances tribute to Mitchell from Diana Reeves, Hope Spalding, Säje and Berklee students Devon Gates, Julian Miltenberger, Milena Married Y Nika Ko. The group performed various songs from Mitchell’s catalogue, including “A Case of You”, “Love”, “Both Sides Now”, “River”, and more. Special guests included Herbie Hancock Y Wayne Shorter.
Last July Mitchell made his first live performance since 2013 for the Newport Folk Festival, where he played a full set alongside guest vocalists. Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Wynonna Judd, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes and the organizer of the set, Brandy Carlile.
