Kobe Bryant: Widow wins millions in damages

Because police officers photographed the wreckage and the dead after the fatal helicopter crash, Kobe Bryant’s widow sued the sheriff. Now she was right.

That happened quickly: just two weeks after the start of the process for photos of the scene of the helicopter crash that killed basketball star Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven other people, the jury has now made a verdict. Widow Vanessa Bryant was fined $16 million for inappropriately disseminating images of human remains from the crash, several US media outlets including the New York Times reported unanimously.

The then 41-year-old Bryant, a former Los Angeles Lakers player, and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles in January 2020. They had been on their way to a girls’ basketball tournament.

Kobe Bryant’s death: suffering through photos

Bryant’s widow filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles County district because employees of the district sheriff’s office and the fire department took photos of the victims at the accident site and then showed them to bystanders – for example in bars – without official reason.

In addition to Vanessa Bryant, another relative had complained, who was also awarded a sum of millions on Wednesday. Survivors of other victims of the crash had complained separately.
