Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast launched on Tuesday. First star guest: Tennis icon Serena Williams. However, the reviews of the Spotify project are mixed.
As a Duchess and former actress, the stage Duchess Meghan can claim is big even without her own podcast. And yet Duchess Meghan fulfills a wish with her new talk project “Archetypes”. There she can speak for herself, while mostly others talk about her.
by Meghan Markle: voice found again
Or as US author and Meghan’s friend Omid Scobie describes it: “Once silenced by the institution, Meghan finally has her voice back. A voice that will be very familiar to those who followed her before meeting Harry. This time, however, she brought a whole movement with her.”
The expectations before the start of “Archetypes” were high. But what are the reactions? If you look at reviews, the answer is: mixed. “The Times” writer James Marriott calls it “a tastefully set parade of banalities, absurdities and self-aggrandizing Californian platitudes.” “With all the strumming music and the bland conversations (…) you have the feeling of being locked in the relaxation room of a wellness spa with an unusually narcissistic yoga teacher,” he writes. Also in The Times, critic Hilary Rose called the content “pure, narcissistic gossip.”
Scathing reviews in England
The criticism in the London newspaper “The Spectator” is also a slating. “The first guest is Serena Williams, but tennis fans who tune in might be a little disappointed. The show is really all about Meghan because it takes 11 minutes for Serena to even get a word in. It’s hard to believe that 28 people , including eight executive producers, were involved in the production of this episode.
On “Good Morning Britain” Ella Whelan was upset that Meghan and Serena Williams complained about juggling a career and a child. That seems like “a kind of working middle-class feminism (…) that complains about not being celebrated enough”. In England in particular, enthusiasm for Meghan’s podcast was limited.
In the USA, meanwhile, things were a bit more diplomatic. The “Los Angeles Times” wrote that Meghan and Williams are two mothers who exchange honestly. “Forbes”, however, called the first episode a “love festival” without “a lot of information or insight”. In the next episode of Archetypes, the Duchess speaks to Mariah Carey. There will be a total of twelve episodes and “Archetypes” will be released weekly on Spotify.
