With the film character of little Kevin in “Home Alone”, the then ten-year-old Macaulay Culkin became a world-famous child actor. The actor and musician from New York turns 42 today.
In the 90’s everyone loved the golden boy who was left at home by his family when leaving for Christmas vacation. Even in Germany, the American children’s film is still a cult today.
Sat.1 showed it for the eighth time in a row on Christmas Eve last year. The Christmas comedy originally titled “Home Alone” was shown in cinemas more than 30 years ago.
But behind the seemingly ideal world of the then child star was the iron hand of a father who tried to push almost all of his children into the world of show business. His parents’ subsequent divorce and subsequent custody battle shaped Macaulay Culkin’s childhood. A difficult youth culminated in a drug addiction. The former film darling retired from the public eye – and returned to the limelight in 2013 as part of the New York “comedy rock” group The Pizza Underground, until the band broke up again in 2018.
Pizza instead of hamburgers
With The Pizza Underground, Culkin becomes part of a parodic ensemble that literally revolves around the circular delicacy. Songs like “Pizza Gal” or “Take a Bite of the Wild Slice” parody songs by The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed. A YouTube video of Culkin parodying a scene from Jorgen Leth’s 66 Scenes from America starring Andy Warhol has gone viral. But instead of a hamburger, the musician pulls a piece of cheese pizza out of the brown bag, which he devours with relish.
Macaulay Culkin is now married to American actress and singer Brenda Song. They have a son together who goes by the name of Culkin’s sister Dakota, who died in a car accident.
