Joachim Löw: His last press conference was so emotional

In his last appearance in front of the press as national coach, Joachim Löw looked back emotionally on the last 15 years.

One day after the game against England, Joachim Löw appeared in front of the press for the last time as national coach. He also looked back at his career – and got emotional.

“In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined working here for so long,” said Löw about his career. Loew declared visibly disappointed about the last game: “It wasn’t the farewell we had imagined. The disappointment is very, very deep.” He takes responsibility for this departure – “no ifs or buts.” Despite losing the last game, he was forgiving: “Things remain that are important to me, for my life. I am at peace with myself.” He is also happy to now give up the responsibility that he had carried for 15 years.

Löw also talked about saying goodbye to the national team and the support team, which he describes several times as “family”. “I spoke to everyone again this morning.” He talked to all the players individually, said Löw. “You noticed that the night was short and the disappointment is still deep. You will need a few more days to process that.”

Gratitude for lifelong friendships

Löw emphasized the human component in his work several times. The best thing for him in his time as national coach are the lifelong friendships he made. “Those are the things that stay in my memory.” They have always trusted me, supported me, motivated me when I was down, and were happy with me when we achieved a great victory together. These things will stay. I’m so grateful for that. That’s when you like to be a coach. ”

Löw continued: “There are many moments and images that I have saved in my heart over these many years. It is not just the results, but the time together. We have experienced a lot together. These are moments that you cannot forgets.”

Löw doesn’t seem to know yet what comes next. After such an “intense time”, by which he meant the last 15 years, he first needed “emotional distance”. But: “I’ll be a whole-hearted fan and keep my fingers crossed that these players achieve what they want. They deserve it.”
