Grimme award winner: Anke Engelke likes to watch artistic sports

The artist can often be seen on television. But she rarely sits in front of the screen. When she does, she likes to watch athletes.

Grimme award winner and TV star Anke Engelke (56) doesn’t watch much television herself – and if she does, she likes sports. “I like aesthetic sports such as rhythmic gymnastics, diving or gymnastics. I also like to watch figure skating. I always think how passionate these athletes are,” she said to the German Press Agency at the 58th Grimme Awards -Awards on Friday evening in the theater in Marl.

The actress, entertainer and comedian received the “Special Honor of the German Adult Education Association” (DVV) for her decades of TV presence as a versatile artist. “If the Grimme Prize were the Oscar, we would say that we are honoring you today for your life’s work,” said DVV President Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer in her laudatory speech. When Engelke, who had come first, was awarded the last prize after a good two and a half hour show and everyone in the hall rose from their seats, their typical humor flashed: “You’re just happy to finally be allowed to stand.”

The television prize of the German Adult Education Association has been awarded in the Ruhr area town of Marl since 1964.
