Not so long ago, the monarchies in the Middle East presented themselves to the public as fairytale-like as in 1001 Nights. Today, on the other hand, they live almost incomparably to western monarchies. The best example of this change: the Jordanian royal family. It is the only one besides the Moroccan royals to boast of being a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohammed. The current ruler, King Abdulah II, is accordingly referred to on the dynasty’s website as the 41st descendant of Mohammed.
