Brendan Fraser gave details of his role in The Whale: “I gave it my all”

“If there is no risk, then why bother?” Fraser told Vanity Fair about how he stepped into a role with intense depth in his first leading role on film in almost 10 years.

“I want to learn from the people I’m working with at this point in my career. I’ve had so much variety, a lot of ups and downs, so what I’m interested in is the second half of my time doing this, is feeling like I’m contributing to the craft and learning from him. This is a great opportunity. I wanted to disappear into it. My hope was that I would become unrecognizable“.

To further her understanding of Charlie’s psyche, Fraser revealed to the publication that she partnered with an obesity help center to better understand representations of people with higher body weight. She also had to tap into an exhausting state of mind to empathize with Charlie’s struggle to come to terms with immense loss throughout the film.

“This may be the first and last time I ever do this again, so I gave it all I had.”, said about taking on a role with such full scope as Charlie. “And I did. That’s all I have.”
