How DNA influences decisions about love

Currently, various studies show how genetics plays an important role in relationships, especially the HLA and 5-HTA1 genes.

Why am I attracted to certain people?

On many occasions we have asked ourselves why we feel interested in a person and we have not found an answer. Nowadays the science has concluded that the attraction we feel is directly related to the type of human leukocyte antigen or also known as HLA, proteins that help the body’s immune system to differentiate between its own cells, foreign and harmful substances that each one possesses.

Two people with different HLA variations are more likely to be attracted to each other. In addition, studies show that this antigen also influences the composition of body odours, a crucial factor in the attraction of partners, so the greater the difference between two people, the more pleasant they will find the smell of the other, and the greater the sexual desire and satisfaction.

Why do my relationships last a certain amount of time?

A connection can be made between genetic makeup and the likelihood of being in a long-term relationship. A study carried out by scientists at Peking University has shown that some people have greater difficulties than others in establishing long-term love relationships, and this is due to variations in 5-HTA1, a serotonin receptor subtype that regulates its release.

People with genotype C produce higher levels of serotonin – the brain chemical that interferes with people’s mood and happiness – which would influence a lack of problems having love relationships, and make it easier for their romances to last longer and intense, compared to people with genotype CG and GG.

“Usually physical attraction is the first thing that happens when we meet a person, after that other factors come into play, like likes, desires and the like. In this case, our genetics enters as a complement to this “match”. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter related to happiness and euphoria, may also have a connection with love and some research indicates that certain variations in the serotonin receptor may increase the propensity of people to enter into longer lasting relationships”, explains Ricardo Di Lazzaro Filho, medical doctor and genetics specialist and founder of Genera.

How can I find my genetic match?

With this type of study, we reflect on the importance of exploring and knowing ourselves through the different genetic tests, since with them we can deepen and discover the information stored in our DNA to use it for our own benefit. In this sense, it is possible to reveal these and other characteristics and predispositions through the Tests offered by Genera, the first laboratory in Latin America specialized in personal genomics.

If you have already taken the Generic Test of Ancestry, Health and Well-being, you can register and use your genetic data in dating applications that allow you to find predispositions using your genes as a guide. The DNA Romance platform allows people to connect through their DNA, predicting the romantic chemistry between potential partners.
