The guitarist will tour Jazz classics and some of his own compositions recorded in his vast discography.
Russel Malone was born in Albany, Ga. He became interested in music when he was four years old, learning to play a toy guitar that his mother had given him. His early influences were BB King and The Dixie Hummingbirds. Mostly self-taught, Malone was struck at age twelve by a television performance of George Benson with Benny Goodman.
He began his musical career in 1988, first with Jimmy Smith, with whom he collaborated for two years, and then with Harry Connick Jr., with whom he remained for the next three years. In 1995, she joined Diana Krall’s backing trio as a guitarist, participating in the recording of three Grammy Award-nominated albums, including When I Look in Your Eyes, the Grammy-winning album for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. By the end of the decade, Malone was featured on several recordings by pianist Benny Green: Kaleidoscope (1997), These Are Soulful Days (1999), and Naturally (2000). Later, the two formed a duo with which they released the albums Jazz at The Bistro in 2003 and Bluebird in 2004. They performed until 2007.
Malone has collaborated on tour with Ron Carter, Roy Hargrove, and Dianne Reeves and has been a part as a backing session musician for artists such as Kenny Barron, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Jack McDuff, Mulgrew Miller, and Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson. He recorded his first solo album in 1992 and also led his own trio and quartet. Other outstanding collaborations have been with Bobby Hutcherson, Dr. Lonnie Smith and with veteran pianist Hank Jones during his 90th birthday celebration. In October 2008 he teamed up with guitarist Bill Frisell. Over the next year, Malone joined saxophonist Sonny Rollins’ band.
Malone made a live recording between September 9 and 11, 2005, at the Jazz Standard in New York, which was published by the Maxjazz label in two albums, Live at Jazz Standard, Volume One (2006) and Live at Jazz Standard, Volume Two (2007). The band that recorded these albums, under the name of The Russell Malone Quartet, consisted of pianist Martin Bejerano, bassist Tassili Bond, and drummer Johnathan Blake.
