The result of the internal party vote is in: Liz Truss is the new British Prime Minister and successor to Boris Johnson.
After weeks of duel, it is clear who will succeed Boris Johnson (58) as British Prime Minister. Foreign Minister Liz Truss (47) prevailed against her rival within the party, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak (42). More than 81,000 votes went to Truss in the UK Conservatives vote. Her opponent Sunak got around 60,000 votes. Expressed as a percentage, Truss accounted for 57 percent of valid votes, .
Liz Truss: “We will deliver”
In her victory speech, Truss thanked outgoing Prime Minister Johnson and promised, among other things, to address the energy crisis. “We will deliver, we will deliver, we will deliver,” said Truss at the end of her speech. After the vote among the members of the Conservative Party, the 47-year-old becomes the new party leader and thus also Prime Minister of Great Britain – only the third woman after Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) and Theresa May (65).
Truss and Johnson will travel to Balmoral Castle in Scotland tomorrow, Tuesday, where Queen Elizabeth II (96) is currently staying. This is where the official handover of official business takes place.
