China celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party

China celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party with a pompous ceremony. In a speech on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, head of state Xi Jinping described the “irreversible” rise of China to world power. In front of the huge portrait of party and state founder Mao Tse-tung, Xi said that the party lifted millions of people out of poverty and also contributed a lot to global development. The time to harass China is “forever over”.

Thousands of singers took part in the spectacular production and sang patriotic songs. Fighter planes flew in formation over Tiananmen Square, helicopters formed the number 100 in the sky.Tightly packed and without corona protective masks, spectators sat on the square, young party members made their vows of loyalty together.

The Chinese Communist Party was founded in Shanghai in the summer of 1921 by Mao and a small group of fellow campaigners. Today it has around 95 million members.
