Antonio Banderas will be Pablo Picasso in a musical about the artist

The actor and the production traveled last week to Malaga, the birthplace of Picasso and toured the museum that exhibits the work of the artist from Malaga.

It is not the first time that Banderas plays Picasso. In 2017, he was part of the series “Genius: Picasso”produced by National Geographic, which reviewed the work of the painter. “When I approach a character I try not to make a moral judgment, I leave that to the public. We have tried to reflect on the person and the artist. But he was a man who liked women and life in general too much. He liked to live a lot,” Banderas described it then.

“When I got into the dark areas of his personality, I had a hard time, and then I rebelled against the writers and discussed them. But at the same time, the professionalism itself forced me not to make any kind of moral judgment on the character,” The actor told in an interview he gave to El País in 2018 in which he recounted what it was like to interpret the painter that time.

As a central figure in 20th century culture, Picasso has often had a presence in film and on television. One of the most remembered representations of the painter is the one carried out by the filmmaker james ivorywith the film “Surviving Picasso” 1996, focused on the years in which the artist, played by Anthony Hopkinswas romantically linked to Francoise Gilot.

On the other hand, Swedish comedy “The Adventures of Picasso” of 1978, with the direction of Tage Danielssonreviews the biography of the painter but in a grotesque key and that falls into numerous anachronisms by not taking into account the chronology of the events.

There were also two well-remembered biographical series on Picasso. The one performed by Banderas and “Young Picasso”from 1992, was directed by Juan Antonio Bardem and starring Malaga Tony Zenet. Throughout four episodes, the first years of Picasso in Barcelona and Paris are narrated until the creation of the famous painting “The young ladies of Avignon”.
