The Crown portrays the life of the queen Isabel II from her wedding in 1947 with Felipe, Duke of Edinburgh, until the beginning of the 21st century. Claire Foy plays Isabel in the first and second seasons, and Olivia Coleman in the third and fourth. Foy returned for a brief cameo in a flashback scene in season four. Imelda Staunton will play the queen in the fifth and sixth seasons.

What is The Crown about?

The first season shows the events up to 1955, with Winston Churchill resigning as prime minister and the queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, deciding not to marry peter townsend.

The second season covers the Suez crisis in 1956, which led to the retirement of the prime minister anthony eden; the prime minister’s Harold Macmillan in 1963, after the scandal of the Profumo case; and the birth of Prince Edward in 1964.

The third season spans from 1964 to 1977, beginning with the election of Harold Wilson as Prime Minister and ending with the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, also spanning the time of Edward Heath as prime minister. The third season also introduces Camilla Shand.

The fourth season is set during the period of Margaret Thatcher as prime minister and presents the marriage of Carlos with Lady Diana Spencer, along with the births of Princes William and Harry. Events depicted include the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, their 1983 tour of Australia and New Zealand, the Falklands War, the infiltration of Michael Fagan at Buckingham Palace, Lord Mountbatten’s funeral, the Princess of Wales’s appearance at Barnardo’s Champion Children’s Awards, and Mrs. Thatcher’s departure from office. The season ends with Diana realizing that her marriage has no future.
