SP Regional Councilor Birgit Gerstorfer calls for 100 projects to be tackled “immediately”. But the state’s budget for school renovations in 2020 and 2021, at 19.6 million euros each, is “significantly” lower than around 2014 (24.7 million euros).
“Every third school is a renovation case,” says SP club chairman Michael Lindner. His figures: In 2020, 33 school renovation projects were in the construction phase, 58 were ready for construction and 153 were marked, and that at 680 schools in Upper Austria. Compared to 2019, the number of registered schools has even increased by 20. “The figures show that demand is growing,” says Lindner. For the municipalities it is more difficult that only around a third of the costs are covered by state subsidies.
The SP has not taken into account the situation in the statutory cities of Linz, Wels and Steyr – their schools are not on the state’s redevelopment list.
