Höhner singer Henning Krautmacher will stop at the end of 2022. It gets quite emotional for the 65-year-old, as he now reveals in an interview.
The Cologne cult band Höhner will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2022. To honor this, the group came up with something special. The two Höhner boxes “50 Years – 50 Hits” (three CDs) and “50 Years” (six CDs) will be released this Friday (September 9th). In the coming years, the band will have to do without frontman Henning Krautmacher (65). He gives his last concert at the end of December and hands over the baton to Patrick Lück (47), who has been on stage with the Höhners since 2021.
Saying goodbye after more than 35 years is not easy for him. “I’m afraid that one or two tears will flow at the last concert,” explains Krautmacher in an interview with the news agency spot on news. But the band will not completely lose it, as the cult singer reveals.
Mr. Krautmacher, did you survive your recent corona infection?
Henning Krautmacher: The infection in August was my second. I was very happy that I had to experience almost no symptoms. Just a little sore throat and a little bit of discomfort for a day or two. The previous vaccinations were obviously good and correct.
How difficult will it be for you to completely turn your back on the Höhnern?
Krautmacher: We will see that when the time comes. I’ll be sharing the stage with six other Höhners until the end of December. But, to be honest, I’m afraid that one or two tears will flow at the last concert.
How much heartbreak will there be in the last concerts?
Krautmacher: I go with a laughing and a crying eye. I do think that there will be a bit of heartache – after all, I’ve put my heart and soul into my job in the band. But I’m also in good spirits because I know that in Patrick Lück I have the best successor anyone could wish for. And the new Höhner as a whole are musically and personally “Formula 1”.
Will you stay with the band at least in the background?
Krautmacher: I firmly believe in that. Why should it be different in my case than with Peter Werner, Janus Fröhlich, Hannes Schöner, to name just a few, who are all consulted again and again and are available to the band in thoughts and deeds.
You don’t want to retire after you exit. Among other things, a thriller is on the agenda. Can you reveal a little more about it?
Krautmacher: The only thing I can reveal is that a publisher has already been found who wants to publish the book. My reaction at the time was: “Don’t you want to wait until I’ve written the thriller?” Nevertheless, it is a nice feeling to be given such trust. But I can’t, won’t and won’t reveal anything about the content just yet. It has to be a little exciting.
They also want to spend more time in the kitchen again. Do you have a recipe that you particularly enjoy cooking?
Krautmacher: From my point of view, recipes are there to be interpreted individually. That’s why I love to improvise. The “other mustache” – I’m talking about professional chef Horst Lichter – once invented the term “Rum-fort”. That means: You look around the kitchen and what is “standing around” and “must go” is creatively processed into a delicious menu. I like that.
What further plans do you have for your time after the Höhnern?
Krautmacher: The first thing that comes to mind is my family. There are four generations in total, for which I will now have a little more time. My dear 95 year old mother, my wife, my children and my granddaughter. I will also stand at the easel a little more often again and create pictures.
Which experiences do you particularly like to think back to with the Höhnern?
Krautmacher: The most impressive experience was exactly 30 years ago. Our participation in the concert “Arsch Huh, Zäng ussenander!” – against any form of violence, xenophobia and right-wing extremism – attracted more than 100,000 people to Chlodwigplatz in the south of Cologne on November 9, 1992. But I will not forget the trips around the world that I was able to make together with the other Höhners. Our concert, as the first Western European band ever, on the Great Wall of China in Beijing, our trip to Brazil for the World Cup or our tour on “Route 66” from Arizona to Las Vegas are unforgettable. And of course our recent “little guest performance” in front of more than 20,000 heavy metal fans at the Wacken Festival.
