Today Kerstin Otts new studio album “All cats are gray at night” is released. In the interview, the singer talks about her family life.
Kerstin Ott (39) is back with her new studio album “All cats are gray at night” after almost two years of Corona break. On Friday (September 10th) the long player will be available in stores and on all popular music streaming services. In 2016 the singer reached number two in the German charts with the stereo act version of her song “Die immer laughs”. Since then, Ott has become an indispensable part of the hit scene.
In an interview with the news agency spot on news, the 39-year-old reveals what is behind the title “All cats are gray at night”, what she values in relationships and what the secret of her long-term love affair with Karolina Köppen is. She also talks about her everyday family life with her wife and children during the lockdown.
Congratulations! Almost two years after “I have to tell you something”, your long-awaited next studio album “Nachts alle Katzen sind Grau” is now released. What is the difference between the new album and your previous music?
Kerstin Ott: I think if you enjoy listening to Kerstin Ott’s music, you will not be disappointed. Great titles have emerged that are danceable on the one hand and have very nice stories on the other.
“All cats are gray at night” has a total of 13 titles. How long did you work on the album?
Ott: We worked on it for a little more than a year.
The title song is also called “At night all cats are gray” – what is the message behind the track?
Ott: The message is: You can go out, immerse yourself in the crowd and have fun together. All that we haven’t had in the last few months.
In addition to good mood songs, there are also ballads like “If you think you know them”. In it you sing about an unpredictable partner. What are the real no-gos in a relationship for you?
Ott: For me, a relationship without trust would be an absolute no-go. Honesty and respect are just as important. And humor is very important to me!
You have been married to your Karolina since 2017. What is the secret of your long-term love happiness?
Ott: We always talk to each other. Not only when things are not going smoothly, but also when things are going particularly well.
Your job is extremely demanding and certainly often not easy. Can you rely on Karolina and your family in difficult times?
Ott: Of course. We all stick together and that is also important.
On Instagram you give your fans insights into your family life every now and then. How important is the exchange with your community to you?
Ott: I usually do it from my gut. I like to let people participate. And since I don’t do it every day to get even more followers, it’s also fun.
Is there anything you don’t post on the internet?
Ott: That always depends on the situation. But I wouldn’t do anything that is too private.
The corona pandemic initially slowed you down extremely in terms of performances and concerts. How have you been spending your time since the pandemic started?
Ott: At first we really enjoyed coming down from all the gigs and completely renovated our house. But now we are also happy that things are finally starting again.
The lockdown meant that many families were together around the clock. How has that affected your own family life? Did you sometimes have arguments?
Ott: No significant stress. The children were always busy, which was certainly also due to the fact that we have a large garden and enough space in the house. We also always tried to have something to do in order not to fall into such a lethargy. That worked out fine.
Did you discover new aspects of yourself during the lockdown?
Ott: I understood that slowing down a bit can also be fun.
Discussions are currently underway about allowing concerts to take place in compliance with the 3G or 2G rule. How do you feel about it?
Ott: I am a vaccination advocate. However, I also think that everyone has to decide for themselves what is right for them, without being attacked for it.
You have already sung songs with Jürgen Drews and Helene Fischer. Is there a celebrity that you absolutely want to do a duet with?
Ott: Tracy Chapman would be great.
