For the first time he performs “The Giovanni Zarrella Show”. In an interview, he reveals how Giovanni Zarrella got his own show.
A new era begins for Giovanni Zarrella (43, “Ciao!”) On Saturday (September 11th). For the first time he will present his own big music show “The Giovanni Zarrella Show” live from Berlin from 8:15 pm on ZDF. The musical program of the three-hour show includes pop stars such as Andrea Berg (55), Maite Kelly (41), Kerstin Ott (39), Nino de Angelo (57) and Santiano as well as Zarrella’s good friend, singer Pietro Lombardi (29). Sasha (49) and Alvaro Soler (30) as well as international guests such as soprano Sarah Brightman (61) are expected from the pop area.
Giovanni Zarrella reveals how he deals with the stage fright in front of such a big live show in an interview with the news agency spot on news. But first he tells how it came about that he hosted his own TV show in the first place.
How did you come to your own music show on ZDF?
Giovanni Zarrella: In 2018 I was Andrea “Kiwi” Kiewels [56] Co-moderator at “ZDF-Fernsehgarten” and the feedback on the show was so good that we sat down again afterwards and discussed whether there could be further cooperation. Then nothing happened for a while. And around the time when the album “La vita è bella”[ 2019] turned my life upside down, ZDF decided to start a new music show. The host should be able to moderate and sing and have access to the people. Certainly two or three more names will have been around in addition to my name during this development phase of the show, but at some point last year I got the call saying that the choice had been made on me. I hadn’t expected that at the time, because I was just so happy that it was going so well musically again.
How did you and your family react after the call?
Zarrella: My wife [Jana Ina Zarrella (44), Red.] and I was just standing in the kitchen and we just went crazy with joy. In this really tough year that we all had, that was news that carried me through the months that followed. Our children too [geb. 2008 und 2013] were very happy. But it was especially nice for me to be able to tell my parents. They reminded me of how we used to live above their pizzeria and then they came upstairs on Saturday evening with two or three pizzas and we “bet that ..?” have watched on ZDF. They are incredibly proud because now they also know that it was worth it that we all held out together and carried on. It’s a family success. There is no other way of saying it.
Could there be a double moderation with your wife – like the legendary Paola and Kurt Felix for “Do you understand fun?”
Zarrella: I’ve already moderated together with Jana Ina and could very well imagine it again, but it’s not planned for my show at the moment. I love to spend a lot of time with her and we also don’t get into each other’s wool when we switch from private to professional and vice versa. For us it’s just the opportunity to spend even more time together.
What are you particularly looking forward to and what are you scared of before the first three-hour live show?
Zarrella: A three hour live show means it is without a false bottom. What happens happens. That is of course a great responsibility, but also a great opportunity and opportunity to be spontaneous, to be real, to let it take shape without being able to repeat anything. It has a very special, very special energy. And I’m also really happy that I can do that. Nothing makes me shudder. But I certainly have a lot of respect, after all, it’s a legendary slot and a long program that is filled with great artists, interesting conversations and performances that are well worth seeing. I am very happy that the 20 years of experience that I have gained will come to a head in my own Saturday evening show, which will be presented live on Second German Television. That is definitely the highlight of my career so far.
Sometimes live is even a bit easier because you can’t expect perfection, you just have to let yourself be carried away …
Zarrella: That’s right. It should be a long journey anyway with several shows. After each broadcast we will sit down and discuss what we might want to adjust. I am completely satisfied with our planned kick-off show: I love the process. I love the guest list. The way it is staged is certainly very special. I don’t think you’ve ever seen it like this before. We wanted to do something really special, not just the next music show ….
The first show will be broadcast on September 11th. Will the 20th anniversary of the New York attacks matter?
Zarrella: We are doing a musical entertainment show and it is certainly also under discussion how we should deal with this topic. The station will definitely dedicate itself to the topic on this day.
Shortly before the curtain finally rises, the stage fright is likely to be great. How do you deal with that?
Zarrella: When the first performance – a moderation or a song – is through and the first applause comes, my stage fright is gone. Otherwise there is no remedy against it. When you no longer feel the stage fright, the fire is out. I’ve never had an appearance without stage fright. And that’s also wonderful, it should stay that way.
