Important Argentine presence at the San Sebastian Festival

Argentina will have a large presence that covers almost all sections, starting with “El suplente”, by Diego Lerman, and “Pornomelancolía”, by Manuel Abramovich, which will compete in the Official section for the Golden Shell, the festival’s top prize.

For its part, “Sublime”, Mariano Biasin’s debut film that participated in Generation 14plus at the Berlin Festival, will compete in Horizontes Latinos, the section that draws on films produced in Latin America.

In Zabaltegi-Tabakalera, the section dedicated to the most experimental or risk cinema, the national productions “Friends on a country road”, by Santiago Loza; “Lauquen Trench”, by Laura Citarella; and “Diaries”, by Andrés Di Tella.

Two highlights of this edition will be the screenings of “Argentina, 1985”, by Santiago Miter with Ricardo Darín and Peter Lanzani, the film about the Trial of the Military Juntas; and “One year, one night”, which addresses the terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015 in Paris, directed by the Spanish Isaki Lacuesta starring the Argentine Nahuel Pérez Biscayart.

Both titles are included in Perlak, where the relevant films according to critics or that have been originally presented at other Class A festivals are found.

The Argentine participation in San Sebastian is completed with “Virgilio”, by Alfred Oliveri, who after “A Family Affair” (2018) and “The Legend of Don Julio: Heart & Bone” (2019), returns to the focused section in productions related to gastronomy with a documentary about Virgilio Martínez, considered one of the best chefs in the world and owner of a restaurant in Lima, Peru.

Added to this national presence is the prominent place that will be occupied by the producer Matías Mosteirín, who was originally part of the Official Jury of the San Sebastian Festival and who became none other than its president, instead of the American actress Glenn Close, who called off the engagement due to a family emergency.

The festival that takes place in this city in northeastern Spain, presents in its 70th. anniversary a truly overwhelming range of figures, who will arrive as guests starting tomorrow in Donostia -such is the name of the city in Basque- and in many cases, to present films.

The list begins with French Juliette Binoche and Canadian David Cronenberg, who will receive the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award and will accompany their respective films, “Avec amour et acharnement” in the case of the actress and “Crimes of the future”, for the director’s side.

They are joined by Ricardo Darín, who will present “Argentina, 1985” after going through the Venice competition; and Penélope Cruz, who will arrive at the Basque festival with “En los margines”, the debut feature by Argentine actor Diego Botto.

Diane Kruger and Liam Neeson (“Marlowe”), Hannah Schygulla (“Peter Von Kant”), Olivia Wilde (“Don’t Worry Darling”) and Sebastián Lelio (” TheWonder”).

In addition, there will be the French Louis Garrel (“L’innocent”) and François Ozon (“Peter von Kant”); Romanian Cristian Mungiu (“RMN”), and Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (“Tori et Lokita”).

For years, Latin American cinema has considered the Spanish festival the gateway to Europe and a showcase to the world. In this sense, the filmmakers of the region will have a prominent presence.

In addition to the Argentines already mentioned, the latest works by the Colombian Laura Mora (“The Kings of the World”), the Mexican Natalia Beristain (“Noise”), the Chilean Diego Céspedes (“The creatures that melt under the sun “) and Patricio Guzmán (“My imaginary country”), the Bolivian Natalia López Gallardo (“Mantle of gems”), and the Costa Rican Valentina Maurel (“I have electric dreams”), among many others.

With one of the most robust cinematographies in the world, Asian cinema will also be part of this edition with Japanese directors Hirokazu Koreeda (“Broker”), Genki Kawamura (“Hyakka”) and Takayuki Fukata (“Naname no rouka”), in addition to the South Korean master Hong Sangsoo (“Walk Up”), and Chinese Wang Chao (“A Woman”).

Finally, several Argentine directors will participate in the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, which will take place as part of the San Sebastian Festival.

“They burn in the same way”, by Clarisa Navas; “Condensed milk”, by Anahí Berneri; “Everyone”, by Agustina San Martín; “Rona”, by Emiliano Torres; and “Inspección en la tierra”, by Mariano Luque, are the projects that aspire to the prize of 10,000 euros that are planned for the winning project.

Meanwhile, “El Castillo”, a new film by Argentine director Martín Benchimol, was selected along with five other feature films in the post-production phase to participate in the WIP Latam that provides support for the completion of projects.
