Prince Andrew allegedly sexually abused a minor 20 years ago. A corresponding complaint has been transferred. But did everything turn out correctly? Andrew’s lawyers want to abandon the process because of a formal error.
Prince Andrew, the second eldest offspring of the Queen and royal enfant terrible, causes scandals non-stop. The prince is in the public’s crosshairs because he is accused of abusing a minor. Since the Royal recently made his way to Scotland, the British media were unaware that there could be much more to the trip than the mother’s visit. With the “escape” he wanted to avoid being served with the application. Now it became known that the documents had long been delivered. But was everything right there?
According to court files that have been accessible since Friday, a representative of plaintiff Virginia Giuffre presented the documents to a police officer at the entrance to the Prince’s residence in Windsor, England, on August 27. According to the court document, Giuffre’s representative stated on oath that he had not met the prince in person and therefore presented the documents to a police officer. A spokesman for Andrews did not want to comment on AFP’s request.
Will the negotiation break?
Giuffre had filed the lawsuit in a civil court in New York on August 9th. The now 38-year-old is demanding compensation from the 61-year-old prince. The accusation: Sex offender Jeffrey Epstein “loaned” her to Andrew as a minor for sexual abuse, Giuffre said.
Andrew abused her more than 20 years ago in the house of Epstein’s then girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell in London. The then 17-year-old was according to her complaint by Epstein, Maxwell and Prince Andrew “against her will to have sexual intercourse with Prince Andrew”. In addition to London, the prince also abused her in Epstein’s house in New York and on Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean.
A first hearing is scheduled for Monday. However, Andrew does not have to take part in this. But it is no longer certain whether it will take place as planned. Because the documents were not properly delivered, Andrews lawyers now argue, as the “Mail Online” reports. So, according to the report, they planned to boycott the hearing. In addition, the Royals team hope that the lawsuit will be dismissed due to a formal error. Andrew’s attorney also stated in writing that he wanted to invalidate a document of the lawsuit signed by Guiffre in 2009. It is the first clue as to how the prince and his lawyers are planning to fend off the case after weeks of silence.
Prince Andrew denies the allegations
The multimillionaire Epstein is said to have sexually abused underage girls and young women and incited them into prostitution for years. The well-connected investment banker, who had already been convicted of sex crimes, was found dead in his Manhattan prison cell after his new arrest in 2019; according to official information, he had committed suicide. Epstein had good contacts with numerous politicians and celebrities, including the ex-US presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump as well as Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
Epstein’s former girlfriend Maxwell pleaded innocent at a court hearing in New York in April. She is accused of having recruited minors for Epstein. The trial is scheduled for the end of November.
The prince was a confidante of the two accused Epstein and Maxwell, but says he had nothing to do with the alleged abuse of the girls. In general, Prince Andrew has vehemently denied all allegations made by Giuffre. He also denies meeting her, claiming a photo of the two taken in London in 2001 may have been tampered with. After a disastrous BBC interview on the Epstein scandal in late 2019, he resigned from his public office.
