With his departure from royal family, Prince Harry also lost all his military titles. There is now a special exception for a wake in honor of the Queen: the 38-year-old should be allowed to appear there in uniform.
Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin will be laid out in London’s Westminster Hall until the morning of her funeral. Hundreds of thousands of Brits have been queuing for days to say goodbye to their Queen. The children and grandchildren of the late monarch will honor her with a wake.
For the occasion, both Prince Harry and Prince Andrew will be allowed to wear a military uniform as a one-off exception. This is reported by the British newspaper “Daily Mirror”, citing sources in the royal palace. At first there were reports that only Andrew was allowed to wear a uniform, now Harry has been allowed to do so too.
“Common sense prevailed. It was a ridiculous situation considering the Duke of Sussex has served his country and is a highly respected member of the armed forces with everything he has done for the veterans,” the paper said an insider. There is no official confirmation from the royal family yet. So far, Prince Harry and Prince Andrew – unlike Prince William, Prince Edward or King Charles III. – always have to wear a suit at the funeral ceremonies.
Children and grandchildren stand vigil at the Queen’s coffin
The two royals had had their military titles revoked some time ago. Prince Andrew earlier this year for his involvement in an abuse scandal involving convicted felon Jeffrey Epstein. Prince Harry lost his titles back in 2020 when he officially left the royal family.
A first wake is to take place on Friday evening at 8.30 p.m. German time. Then King Charles III. and his three siblings positioned around the Queen’s coffin for 15 minutes. A similar ceremony took place earlier this week at Edinburgh Cathedral.
On Saturday evening, all eight of the Queen’s grandchildren are to come together for 15 minutes. In addition to Prince William and Prince Harry, these are Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, as well as Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn. An exact time for the beginning of this ceremony is not yet known.
