Former WDR director Fritz Pleitgen is dead. The 84-year-old died in Cologne last night.
The former WDR director Fritz Pleitgen (1938-2022) died in Cologne on Thursday evening. This was announced by his broadcaster on Friday morning. The journalist and author was 84 years old. Today’s WDR director Tom Buhrow (63) praised Pleitgen as a “highly respected broadcast manager, correspondent and political journalist who decisively shaped WDR”.
His battle with pancreatic cancer
Fritz Pleitgen worked as a journalist at Westdeutscher Rundfunk from 1963 and was its director from 1995 to 2007.
In 2020, Pleitgen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He reported on this and his recovery in his book “An Impossible Story” (2021) and in (2021).
Born in Duisburg, he was married from 1969 and had four children. He lived in Bergisch Gladbach until his death.
