LaTanya Richardson Jackson, in her Broadway directorial debut, takes a more literal take on history than her predecessors.
“I think men have either shied away or wanted to make a metaphor out of this. And I’m like, oh no, I’m telling a ghost story,” she said.
Samuel Jackson, in the role of Doaker Charles, returns to the play after playing the character’s nephew, Boy Willie, in his first production at the Yale Repertory Theater in 1987.
“When the play traveled and came back to Broadway and I was an understudy, I was pretty devastated that I wasn’t going to make my Broadway debut,” the actor said.
“I drowned in some kind of drug-fueled madness and ended up in rehab, which, you know, started a whole different journey for me.”
John David Washington, who is making his Broadway debut as Boy Willie, is dealing with a lot of different feelings, he said. “I’m very excited to step on that stage and present this work in the best, the best way possible.”
The preview of the show, also starring Danielle Brooks, is on September 19.
