It’s not an action film, but a reflection on the moral issues of the present. In the year 2056, climate change has the earth in its grip, the CEOs of large corporations, who govern instead of heads of state, have retreated to air domes. Soldier Hannah (Julia Franz Richter) is on the ISS with two colleagues (George Blagden and Mark Ivanir) just as the earth is sinking in a catastrophe.
Fierce discussion in space
Discussions about ethics and responsibility spread. In tense dialogues, each crew member fleshes out their ideas when the question suddenly arises as to whether to launch a risky rescue operation for survivors back on Earth. Dimitri, whose groundbreaking algae project produces clean air, opposes this. Hannah finds herself in a conflict between private and social duties. Idealist Gavin overlooks the injustices of earth’s two-class system and works to save his own species.
“Rubikon” deservedly won the prize for the best Austrian production at the Kitzbühel Film Festival. Because the charged dynamics of the trio and the questions raised make you think – the film doesn’t have any answers ready. (APA)
