The Spanish singer María Mendiola from the women’s duo Baccara is dead. Mendiola died in Madrid at the age of 69 “with her loved ones,” the family said. The cause of death was initially not disclosed.
At the side of Mayte Mateos (70) Mendiola was successful in the second half of the 70s. Shortly after the duo was founded in 1977, they landed a world hit with “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie”.
The two Spaniards were successful in collaboration with German producers with songs such as “Sorry I’m a Lady”, “Ay, Ay Sailor” and “Darling”. The duo represented Luxembourg at the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest in Paris. With “Parlez-vous français?” it took seventh place.
The success did not last long: the trained flamenco dancers, who met and befriended each other at the Spanish television ballet, parted ways in 1982 in an argument. Both tried their luck as solo artists and soon each formed new groups.
For years there were even two duos that went by the name of Baccara. The success they had celebrated more than 40 years ago should not come close to either of the two women after the separation. According to the media, Mendiola and Mateos were largely able to reconcile in private.
Mendiola, for example, who was revered by gays in many countries as a glamorous diva, most recently worked with the Spanish singer Cristina Sevilla. She paid tribute to her colleague on Instagram: “How difficult it is for me to publish that … My dear María, a wonderful artist, but for me above all my friend … She left us today.
